Every April, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) leads a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about one of the most preventable causes of vehicle crashes: distracted driving. As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, law enforcement agencies and safety advocates are making an extra push to promote responsible, focused driving — and Can-Am Telematics is proud to join that mission.

The Reality of Distracted Driving
In 2022 alone, 3,308 lives were lost in the U.S. due to distracted driving — and nearly 290,000 people were injured. These numbers likely underrepresent the true impact due to reporting limitations. The primary culprit? Cell phone use behind the wheel.
In Vermont, 33 deaths over the past five years have been linked to distracted driving, accounting for nearly 10% of all traffic fatalities in the state. Nationwide and locally, these are not just statistics — they represent real people, families, and communities impacted by avoidable tragedies.
Stronger Enforcement, Smarter Habits
This April, law enforcement officers across the country are increasing patrols to enforce texting and distracted driving laws. In Vermont, for example, penalties range from a $162 fine and 2 points on your license, up to license suspension and higher penalties in school or work zones.
But enforcement alone isn’t enough — changing driver behavior is key. The NHTSA recommends a few simple but powerful actions to eliminate distractions:
Pull over safely if a message or call can’t wait.
Use a passenger as your designated texter when needed.
Silence notifications or activate “Do Not Disturb” modes while driving.
Keep your phone out of reach — in the glove box, trunk, or back seat.
