JJM Mechanical Group runs just eight vehicles, but it wanted the same control over its fleet that much larger operations have. With Geotab, the company cut harsh driving events by 24%, reduced unbelted driving time by 66%, gave customers more accurate arrival times and recovered a stolen van within hours instead of days.

About JJM Mechanical Group

JJM Mechanical Group installs and maintains plumbing, natural gas equipment, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Its technicians handle a steady stream of urgent service calls, often driving straight from home to the first job of the day.

The challenge: urgent calls and after-hours risk

When a customer has an urgent problem, they want to know when the technician will show up, and JJM wants to send whoever is closest. Without knowing where each vehicle was, the team couldn't give accurate arrival times or dispatch efficiently.

Because technicians parked their vans at home overnight, JJM also needed a way to limit unauthorized after-hours use, protecting both its drivers and its vehicles.

Why small fleet telematics made sense

JJM already leased and serviced its vehicles through Zeemac, a Canadian vehicle leasing and servicing company that is also a Geotab reseller and certified installer. That made adding Geotab simple: vans arrived with a Geotab GO device already installed, and Zeemac trained JJM's staff on MyGeotab.

  • Seamless setup: Vehicles came ready to go, and JJM connected its Geotab driving data to a scheduling app so technicians could easily be told about their next job.

  • Driver safety: Drivers knew from day one that their driving was being monitored, which encouraged safer, more efficient habits.

  • Vehicle maintenance: Detailed vehicle health data made it easier to plan preventative maintenance and cut downtime.

Better arrival times and after-hours control

With live vehicle locations, JJM can give clients more accurate service times. Staff are also notified automatically whenever a vehicle is driven outside working hours.

A stolen van, found fast

One van was stolen at the end of a work week. Geotab alerted staff almost immediately that it wasn't where it should be, so the team recovered it far sooner than if the theft had only been noticed on Monday morning.

Safer drivers

Knowing their driving was visible changed drivers' habits, leading to the drop in harsh events and a big improvement in seatbelt use.

Less downtime and tighter cost control

Engine data, especially battery drain reports, helps JJM spot problems and schedule maintenance before a vehicle breaks down. Trip reports also let staff check fuel card use and driver timecards, and preventative service means fewer working hours lost to repairs.

What's next

Building on these results, JJM Mechanical Group is now considering adding fuel card and dash cam integrations.
