Fleet managers looking to minimize risk and improve route safety will be pleased to hear about Geotab’s latest enhancement to U-turn detection in MyGeotab. With this update, Geotab has expanded its detection capabilities to better support both heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks, while increasing the breadth of street types where U-turns can now be identified.
What’s New?
Wider Vehicle Coverage: U-turn detection now supports not just Class 8 heavy-duty vehicles, but also medium-duty trucks — offering greater visibility across more of your fleet.
Expanded Road Type Recognition: The improved algorithm can now detect U-turns on a broader variety of road types, providing more comprehensive insights into driver behavior.
More Frequent Insights: The system has been updated to surface U-turn insight alerts every 60 minutes, up from the previous 30-minute interval. This helps fleet managers track behavior more consistently throughout the day.

Why U-Turn Detection Matters for Fleet Safety
U-turns are often seen as high-risk maneuvers, particularly for larger vehicles that require more space and time to execute them safely. By identifying where and when these turns are happening, you can:
Flag risky driving behavior
Adjust routes to prevent U-turns in tight or unsafe areas
Increase compliance with internal safety policies
Reduce the risk of accidents and property damage
