How White Cap Built a Fleet Safety Program That Cut Speeding 97% with Geotab

White Cap had telematics data, but it wasn't changing how anyone drove. By turning that data into a structured, driver-focused safety program built on Geotab, the construction supplier cut excessive speeding by 97%, improved seatbelt compliance by 97% and reduced aggressive driving by 62% across more than 1,600 vehicles.

About White Cap

White Cap is a one-stop shop for professional contractors across the U.S., supplying tools, building materials and safety gear to infrastructure and industrial construction projects. Its fleet of more than 1,600 vehicles drives over 3 million miles a month and plays a critical role in keeping customers' projects on schedule.

The challenge: data without action

White Cap grew quickly through acquisitions, and each new branch brought its own systems and habits. That left the company with several problems:

  • Legacy systems and scattered data made it impossible to apply one safety standard across every branch.

  • Earlier telematics investments produced data, but nobody was using it to change driver behavior.

  • With no unified strategy, speeding and seatbelt violations weren't flagged consistently, so managers were always reacting after the fact.

As Cyndy James, White Cap's Senior Manager of Transportation (DOT Compliance), put it: "We wanted to not just see the data — but use it to take action."

The four-phase fleet safety program

Working with fleet management company Holman and Geotab, White Cap rebuilt its approach to safety from the ground up using Geotab GO9 devices and a phased rollout.

  1. Define expectations. A discipline matrix set clear driving standards and escalation steps, so every driver and manager knew the rules.

  2. Create visibility. Driver Safety Scorecards were pushed directly to managers, giving each branch consistent visibility into driver performance.

  3. Enable real-time coaching. In-cab and email alerts flagged high-risk behavior as it happened, so managers could coach drivers before problems escalated.

  4. Enhance oversight. Dashcams added context to events and supported evidence-based coaching conversations.

White Cap also rolled out several supporting tools:

  • Geofencing to allocate costs accurately across branches

  • Custom DVIRs (Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) to reduce inspection errors

  • Electronic Logging Devices for more than 100 drivers to support DOT compliance

Instead of drowning in data, White Cap's teams now get reports and alerts built to prompt quick action.

The results

Safety metric

Result

Excessive speeding events

Down 97%

Seatbelt compliance

Up 97%

Aggressive driving (hard braking, hard acceleration, sharp cornering)

Down 62%

DOT severity points

Down 60% year over year

For White Cap, safer driving also means more efficient driving. It cuts downtime, protects drivers on the job and is something customers value.

What's next

White Cap is expanding its dashcam deployment and fine-tuning its coaching processes, with the goal of making safety and accountability part of everyday operations and building a model that scales as the fleet grows.
